YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE

Two days ago, we completed a Psycho-Trauma therapy intervention project. Much as we were contracted to do this, we were dealing with real human beings whose lives had been broken through a series of events of torture that happened during the “Lockdown.” As a lead Therapist on the project I felt overwhelmed the first time I got to meet these clients and listened to their heart rending stories. I wondered how on earth a human being would treat another with such disdain, cruelty and utter disregard. These victims manifested a lot of fear, a good number had started contemplating suicide, despaired at life and had suffered loss of livelihood in the process. It was heartbreaking to see another human being go through life feeling that hopeless.

When treatment begun, I was quickened by what I had learnt in module 1 of Harvest Institute School of Leadership course, we had been challenged with statements such as; “If your life is a story, who has the pen?” We were challenged to take back the pen of our life and write a favorable story for ourselves, our families and our Nations. You can’t do that without shifting from Victim to Victor mentality. At this point, I was reminded of the word in Philippians 4:13 which states that, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (NKJV). This is the mentality of Winners, “Can do” “Will do” that will cause one to rise up and do something, even in the most hopeless situations. You need self-leadership, you need to take personal responsibility.

So, I begun challenging my clients even as their recovery progressed to gradually take back the pen for their life stories. We talked about life goals and values and commitment to these without ignoring their current pain. Eventually the recovery started and resumption of personal responsibility took shape. Even though they are still a work in progress, the stories of healing and forward movement were inspirational and breathtaking as we celebrated end of therapy. I reminded us all about the fun and difficult moments we had through this process and we challenged them to keep on moving forward. Their Sponsors, held a party for them and I was honored with a memorable gift, branded with my name!!!

These clients, came into therapy in a victim state, they were challenged to rise above it and curve out a life of their dreams. They started on it and now they feel liberated. This is what we all should be doing. There’s a Victim mentality and talk which has become a common state of many young and old people. We are born in different families, diverse circumstances and join different vocations and relationships with the variety of challenges and opportunities that arise. When problems come, when we face resistance and battles, the temptation to give up and fall into a victim state is almost natural and easy. But am learning from reading “Church Shift,” that some of these battles are meant to groom us into powerful Game changers for our nations (Sunday Adelaja, Church Shift).

According to Isaiah 54:17, “No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, And their righteousness is from Me,” Says the LORD” (NKJV) If you secure yourself in the Lord, and become His, one thing is for sure, your battles are His battles and whoever fights you must put Him down before they win. I have seen the warrior side of God and I can attest to the fact that when He fights, you will feel sorry for your enemy. However, battle is good for many reasons. According to Pr. Sunday, in battle; God trains us, equips us with His superior weapons, turns our weaknesses into strengths, builds our faith in Him, turns our enemies into our friends, gives us overwhelming victory, makes us stronger and spurs us to more growth (Church Shift, Sunday Adelaja).

Therefore, that trial, difficulty, battle you are going through is not here to kill you, it is here to make you better. Choose to match on with a Victor’s mentality, abandon victim mentality and talk and rise up in faith. God will fight on your side if you choose His side. He will make you a Conqueror and you will transform your society.  Remember this word in Romans 8:37, “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (NKJV). You were made to thrive not survive. You’re bigger than your battle, stronger than your enemy, he is only fighting you because of the immense Blessing God is unleashing on you. According to Pr. Sunday Adelaja in his book, ‘Church Shift,’ the devil fights God’s children and the human race because he is jealous of God’s blessing towards us.

If you are going to amount something significant, embrace the fight, stand on God’s side of life battles and you will surely win. Allow me end with this word from Ephesians 6:10-11; “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil (NKJV). Who you are with matters, your weapons matter. Don’t be a Victim, Take responsibility and Be the Victor. You are Responsible for your life, family, community, office, school, Nation etc. Fight until the sick are healed, fight until marriages are life giving, fight until we have no more street children, fight until we have leaders who listen to the God and the people, fight until it is heaven on earth where you are. You are Responsible. You can Do It.
